Hello friends! We hope you're all enjoying the last bit of August. Is it really almost September?!

We wanted to pop in to let you know you can find us over at decor8 today. Holly so kindly invited us to share some of our favourite things around the apartment as part of her new series, A Few Of My Favorite Things. Hello Friday, oh how we've missed you. It's been a long and very rainy few days here. We Hope the skies are sunny where ever you are today. You may have noticed that we were a bit light on the posts this week.We've been mulling over the possibility of a makeover for our little blog, and have decided to take some time off from posting to see what we can come up with. We promise not to be away too long!

Is it wrong to read through cupcake recipes while eating a cupcake? I think not. Yesterday was just one of those days and by the end of it I was craving a cupcake. I didn't want to wait for the time it would've taken to make some so I indulged and bought one. But these little Butterfly Cakes from Nigella Express do look good! What's your guilty pleasure?

While enjoying my cupcake I also indulged in browing some of my favourite web sites. This fun top from ModCloth is such a lovely colour and reminds me of Casey's cute Alice Dress. Colouring books were one of my favourite things as a kid. The multi-artist version available from Lena Corwin looks like so much fun! And I always like to check out what's new over at The Small Stakes. I am loving the (very) limited edition Sonic Youth poster.

These make me smile. And I really want to spend a day making a whole lot of these.

Hello everyone! Did you all have a good weekend? I was re-reading issue 2 of UPPERCASE, when the article on The Buldging Book of Ephemera got me thinking of the odds and ends: the piece of ribbon, the tag off a shirt, the paper perfume tester strip that we keep. (I actually seek out pretty ones at the department stores.) Inspiration comes from everything, which I think is why we set things like this aside. Sometimes, we even go out of our way to hunt them down. Because even in the simplest paper clip or ticket stub, there's something there that you want to remember.

I gathered a few vintage pieces of wonder today. Where do you look for vintage ephemera? Etsy of course is brimming with it, but besides the occasional yard sale I'm unsure of where to look. I search around Flickr to see people's collections. I've bought a few things from Papier Valise, which is a wonderful online shop of some of the loveliest ephemera I've seen.

I wish I had stacks of odds and ends from relatives past; something that comes with a story. I think we all love the idea of the time that these pieces came from, wouldn't you agree? It would be nice to know more about it. But when it comes right down to it, I adore the look of ephemera! The charm of the past. I hope to get my collection growing. Maybe I'll do paperclips next. I know it's still July and summer is alive and well, but this is usually the time of year when I start getting excited for fall. Fall fashion begins trickling into the stores and you can feel the summer weather winding down. After my first round perusing the new arrivals for the autumn season, I realized how long it's been since I've looked for clothing. Which is a shame because some of the best colours and prints can be found in fashion.

That being said, I wanted to share some of the things I found. I suppose I was inspired by the purple satin in my shot because most of these finds feature lovely violet hues. I still can't decide if stopping by Anthropologie is a good or bad thing. I always find some of the prettiest things but they're sometimes out of my price range. But I adore this Wavelet Blouse! Sweet but not too young. I feel in love with this Wine & Roses Bag the moment I saw it. The pleats make this everyday bag a little more special. And if that doesn't do it, the colour sure will! And how pretty is the Wisp-Of-Lace Tank? I love the crocheted detail around the collar and the print is fantastic. I wish I could buy a few yards of it for pillows and such.

If you haven't yet noticed, Kathryn and I love scarves which is why these necklushes caught my eye. An easy way to look instantly put together. The best part? It can be a scarf, a necklace or a cowl and come in some terrific colours and prints! Be sure to head over to J.Crew to check out their new arrivals, like this gorgeous Silk Sirrah Dress. It looks like hammered metal, doesn't it? And the ruffle collar detail is lovely. Finally, there's the Smocked Two-Tone Skirt I saw over at the Gap. Purple is such a great colour to wear now into the fall. And anyone who knows me knows I can't turn down skirts or dresses with pockets. I truly can't.

I could use a few scoops of this. And am loving the tones and feeling of this and this.

I've been having a case of the blahs for the past few days. I'm not sure why, perhaps it's just the daily grind and monotony of routine catching up with me. I thought a burst of energy (or in this case, colour) was in order! There's nothing like a brightly decorated room to liven up your mood. And since we don't have any of the rooms quite completed in the apartment yet, I needed to pay a visit to some of my favourite places for inspiration.

Since I am still strongly drawn to white decor and all of our walls are currently white, I wanted to look for rooms that worked off a white backdrop. It's also fun to see how colourful you can make a room without having to change the wall colour. I am atttracted to all of these rooms for different reasons. This kitchen is so friendly and inviting. I love that it's not overwhelmingly bright but still makes a statement with the hits of fuschia, purple and yellow. I can imagine lounging for hours in the second living space. I'm also really liking how the furniture provides most of the colour in a room. Everything is perfect in the Chicago living room of Summer and Josh Thorton. And the bookcase in the last photo is pure joy.

I admit it. I'm being awfully tight on the purse strings lately. I needed some magenta paper to line an envelope with, so I brushed some ink over some loose sheets of tracing paper that I have. It actually works pretty well as long as you don't drench the paper in too much ink. (And would work great lining vellum envelopes.) The colour is so vibrant. I think the best part was trying to make the right hue. The paper towel I used to blot on is pretty fun, too!

Breaking out the inks, combined with my recent love affair with my fountain pen got me thinking about an ink post. Whether on its own or used in mixed media, ink is one of my favourite mediums. It can be soft like in this Beautiful Day print by Studio Mela. I love the white space and the colours. It also reminds me of Marichelle's bunting. I'm always drawn to a good pen and ink piece, like this I think you are...heart print by L'Daim Fille. Good ol' black and white with some sweet text and lovely line work. Added plus? It's only $3! Rounding out today's finds is a fantastic mixed media piece, this Today Is the Day print from Stephanie Corfee's shop. The colours are gorgeous and dreamy. I love her little description that "today is the day to fall in love, finish a book, snuggle your kids." Today is the day for anything and everything, don't you think?

For today's post I started thinking about circles and dots. There's nothing quite like a classic polka dot pattern to put a smile on my face. I especially love when it's the lining of a bag or hidden pattern in the pockets of a coat. It can be both sophisticated and playful at the same time.

After seeing these lovely bed linens from castle on seesaw a little while ago, I couldn't stop thinking about them. Oh how I dream of having all the patterns and colours! Check out the artwork section as well, it's pretty awesome. I love the "flatness" of this vinyl dots table runner by Sandy Chilewich. And it comes in a bunch of colours, including hot pink! Sometimes the simplist ideas are the most brillant. I keep coming back to these Sweet 16 blik wall decals. I think coming home to a wall like this would make me a little happier each day.

I'm kind of wishing I was here right now.

I was one of the lucky ones that got to Kate's shop just in time to get one of her amazing necklaces. It arrived last week and I've been trying not to wear it everyday! I love the purple hues in the embroidery thread combined with the vintage brass chain. Lately, I just can't seem to get enough handmade and/or vintage accessories. I guess it's partly because of my love for things that have a story. But everything seems a little more special that way, don't you think?

So of course this mini obsession has lead to a bunch of new favourites on etsy. And what are favourites if you can't share them? First, there's this great pyrite chunk necklace from Ball & Chain. I really like the rawness of the stones combined with the subtle sparkle of the facets. I'm absolutely in love with all the creations at onestonenewyork. This wave ring set is one of favourites though. The organic lines are simply beautiful. And ever since I saw one of shlomitofir's necklaces over at Melissa Loves, I've become a big fan of her work. I think these leaf earrings are calling my name. They would add the perfect bit of whimsy to any outfit.

I can't get over how cute and funny this little guy is!

I love that looking through magazines, pouring over the details of the most perfectly styled rooms, and searching for the real thing online even though you may not be able to afford it can all be considered research. And if that really is the case, I should have been a researcher. Sourcing out prints, patterns, and objects... that would be a dream come true. I suppose I've been researching quite a bit lately, and reading up a bit on spotting great vintage finds. It's true what they say: they just don't make them like they used to.

I haven't sought out specifically vintage items lately. But after last weekend's stop into a few of our favourite vintage and antique shops, I felt it was time to see what's out there. I found these cute Yellow Triangle dishes at Kitsch Cafe which reminds me of Kath's triangle post a little while back. (And of my favourite SuzyJack* paper goods pattern.) When it comes to vintage accessories, The Carrie Clutch at Adore Vintage pretty much qualifies as a great find in my book. It's a perfect dress it up/dress it down piece in pearly leather. And to round things out today, I found a fantastic Mid Century Danish magazine rack at the Modbots shop. I suppose you could use this for anything really, (nicely lined up umbrellas anyone?) because with it's classic design, you know it'll look good doing it.

I adore this, this and this. There are so many lovely things to look at today!

Good Morning friends. Hopefully the sun is shining on you today. It has been grey and rainy here. Really rainy. It does have a refreshing feel to it, though. Like everything is clean and new again. To break the greyness, a lovely package arrived from Tara. She so thougtfully sent a batch of these sinfully good cookies. If you haven't visited her blog, what are you waiting for?! It's filled with great photography and charmingly written anecdotes. She is also featured in issue two of UPPERCASE Magazine. We can assure you, these cookies will not last long around here! Thanks again, Tara!

We just couldn't resist sharing some other sweet treats that have been added to the list of desserts we need to make. This tea infused Crème Brulée looks oh so good, doesn't it? Check out spicy icecream for more delicious inpiration. Jeannette's lovely Lemon Yougurt Cake sounds like the perfect summer dessert. Her love of cake is so endearing, and her explaination of why it's so great makes a lot of sense. Who would turn down a fresh, out of the oven cinnamon bun? No one, that's who! We came across these irrestible Cinnamon Swirl Buns while perusing Smitten Kitchen and have been drooling over them ever since. And somehow it makes us feel a little better that the recipe is listed under breakfast. Finally, we have these Vanilla Cupcakes with Milk Chocolate Ganache Frosting. We're pretty sure that's all we need to say about them, just look at that photo!

Hello and Happy Tuesday, everyone! I hope you're all doing well. A few months ago, I did a post about lines and ever since then, I've noticed them everywhere, in everything. Just this weekend while digging around for a CD, I ended up with a stack of cover art with line work of all kinds. From pen and ink to watercolour and linocut, it was clear that I lines needed to be revisited.

I didn't even need to look beyond the shops of Etsy to find some lovelies for today's line up. (You'll have to pardon the pun, but it had to be said.) I'm loving this Blossoms Series Original Drawing I found in siiso's shop. The colours remind me of days at the lake and the line quality is just lovely. (Her shop and portfolio of work are stunning. Be sure to check them out!) I've had this Pin Cushion by Maramiki in my favourites for a while. It almost looks as if it's embroidered on, doesn't it? Which totally suits it, as it's a pin cushion after all! Finally, I had to include the Lines and Arrows Cushion from be still. It has a nice graphic quality to it with it's thick lines. Very reminiscent of a linocut and just as charming, don't you think?

Happy Wedding Anniversary wishes both Heather (yesterday) and Holly (today)!

And I caved into my brownie craving yesterday. I've wanted one ever since I saw this.

TGIF! It seems like it's taken forever for today to arrive. I seem to be looking forward to weekends more than ever. There's just so much to do and so little time to do them during the week. We're hoping to change things up here on the blog, (we've been meaning to for a while now) so hopefully this weekend will afford us the time to get something started! I also have some major catching up to do in this blogosphere of ours. I've been looking for new sites and blogs to explore. Do you have any recommendations?

That being said, I thought I'd share a few of my bookmarks as of late. There's some great information and visuals here so hopefully you guys can check them out sometime! Proximity Magazine is a contemporary arts & culture magazine based in Chicago, with a lot of great online content. The Book Cover Archive is nothing but fantastic online content. After I discovered this one via Joy, I can't stop clicking through pages and pages of books. My reading list has certainly gotten much longer! I've really enjoyed going through James Gulliver Hancock's portfolio of projects and illustrations. Currently working from L.A., I find his work has a certain charm about it.

J'M is a blog by Toronto based portrait and wedding photographers Justin & Michelle DeMers. Their portfolio of work is stunning. Their studio looks amazing. They seem like just all around fun people. Public School is a creative collective from Austin with a blog filled with neat and curious things from around the web. Finally, we have the porfolio of Randi Brookman Harris. I dream of styling photos as she does one day with clients the likes of Martha Stewart Living and Kate Spade. Le sigh!

And if you haven't read, Kath and I got the opportunity to write the next Blog Beautiful column on the ever sweet and lovely Heather Smith Jones for issue 2 of UPPERCASE magazine! (Which, by the way, is now being carried at the National Gallery of Canada's bookstore! Congrats, guys!)

It's no secret that Peonies are one of my favorite flowers. But ever since we moved into the apartment they've been hard to come by. So my mom graciously painted this lovely portrait for me and now I have them around all year round. Thanks, Mom! I'm really liking the old world quality it has. I feel very lucky to have parents that enjoy creating things and sharing them with family and friends.

I'm always so excited to read Ez and Melissa's Chic for Cheap posts. They both find such fun and wearable pieces. And if you haven't already, be sure to update your bookmarks to Melissa's new site!

Inspired by the golds and pinks of my new painting, I thought I'd look for some clothing picks of my own. Have you been to Ruche yet? I think I might want one of everything on their site. It's a good thing their prices are so amazing! A couple of my favourites right now are this golden leaf bracelet and ruffle chiffon top. How great would that top be paired with black or grey jeans! This Louise clutch by Lauren Merkin is such a wonderful colour, I'm loving the flecks of gold and that it's made of cork! Last but not least are these Jeffrey Campbell shoes, called Disco in Gold. There's nothing like a little disco to get you going!

Lately I've been trying to rediscover things I have. So often I get this or that and it ends up stored away somewhere; I never even get to use them sometimes! It's so easy to forget and I go out and get something new instead. So as I was rereading UPPERCASE magazine, (patiently waiting for issue 2 to arrive) their Postal Service feature had me realizing we haven't done a mail post in a while! Also that I have a lot of envelopes and such that I haven't used for various reasons. But we'll fix that. I adore mail and mail ephemera. Don't you? It always puts a smile on my face.

It's never very difficult finding something good when it comes to the mail. Take this Pen and Ink mail set I spotted at Present&Correct. So sweet and retro, even a note to say hello will seem extra special written on these. (Which is important, wouldn't you agree?) My favourite part about mail is the packaging, since it's what's seen first. A few charming, vintage post labels from Sweet Kate cheer up the plainest package! I love the colours of these. Especially the Special Delivery labels in that green and yellow! Last but not least, I came across this Envelope Mail Sorter from Kit Kelley Organize. Simple but fun, what better way to keep your mail organized than in an envelope? It comes in a dark stain as well as a natural finish. A perfect addition to any office or studio!

Good morning friends. I hope you all had a lovely weekend. In an effort to save a little money I've been trying to stay in and work on things that require attention around the apartment. Currently in progress are a couple of chairs that are in desperate need of new cushions and the studio which has yet to evolve. I think Julie and I have a general consensus on how we'd like it to look (something similar to this would work well for the desk set up), but I'm sure both our individual personalities will come through at each of our work spaces.

While thinking of all the possibilities I got caught up looking at all the wonderful inspiration out there. I seem to be attracted to what I like to call "organized clutter" the most. I really love all three of these spaces. Lab Partners studio has that cool retro feel that I'm always drawn to. The Domino image (found via sarahleeab's flickr) has the bookshelves and the subtle feminine touches that I like. And the Marie Claire Maison image (found via MadeByGirl) is kind of eclectic, which I am also strongly drawn to. Although, I'm not sure about the antlers, they might be a little too much for me. There are always so many options. But we're getting close, I can feel it!

It seems I've gotten off to a late start this morning! I hope it is as sunny and bright where you are as it is here today. It's Friday once again and for our friends to the South, it is a holiday weekend! The fourth of July always gets me thinking about backyard cookouts and colourful decorations. Traditional triangle bunting is one of my favourite ways to dress up a party. What's yours?

I've been thinking a lot about different forms lately and triangles keep popping into my head. And of course this got me wondering what sort of items I could find that utilize this fun shape. I found this great pyramid necklace over at beth pohlman's etsy shop. I love the open framework and since each pyramid is made by hand, each one is unique. I'm also really enjoying this sheet set by Alexander Girard from Urban Outfitters. The subtleness of the colour and pattern is quite striking. This gig poster by Nate Duval is so much fun. The colour palette and repetition of shape is lovely. Finally, the kid (and the grown up!) in me loves this geometry puzzle from Present&Correct. All the different configurations are so interesting.

Here are a few more wonderful shapes. I'm not sure what I'd use them for, but it's fun thinking of the possibilities!

Hello July! And hello to you all! I was so close to asking how your weekends were. Our day off yesterday has got me a little out of sorts. Funny how one day can throw you off track. It was a nice day to have off; it wasn't too hot out, but still warm and sunny. A nice day to sit back and pretty much do whatever you feel! I went through some old magazines and revisited some things I once would have ruled out. Perhaps it's because I adore my blue plate so much, (I know it's a plate but the pattern makes me smile) but blue is beginning to look much more promising as a room colour for me.

Initially, I was looking for only three images to share with you today. But once I began looking, it seemed I had found more than I had bargained for. I thought it would be a little tricky, finding blue spaces that caught my eye, especially predominantly blue ones. As you can see, this wasn't the case. I ooo'd and ahh'd at these cool, striking shades. Every room had a lovely blue treatment, and even though shades were similar, each space has a completely different tone. Which one is your favourite? (Right now, I'm really smitten with 1, 3, and 4.) Do you have a blue space in your home?

The idea of a book club always seemed fun to me. Although I don't think I could ever be part of one. Having to read a book on a deadline makes me nervous. I'm not quite sure why. Perhaps it's because I'm not the fasted reader, it feels like I have to rush through it to be able to finish by the set date. But when it comes to summer, it feels like it was meant to be spent reading away the days. What kind of books do you like to bring to the beach with you?

I've always loved writing my name in a book. Each year in elementary school we'd be assigned our text books and have to write our names in the little stamped area along with all the names of the kids who had the book before us. So I guess this explains my fondness for book plates. I really love these ones created by Andrea Wilkinson. Personalized versions are available in the form of a rubber stamp upon request. Have you all seen the Lili Lite? It acts as a bookshelf, place holder and reading light all in one. And it looks great too. An added bonus is that it ships worldwide! Having a little notebook is always handy to jot down those titles you've been meaning to read. These mini notepads are just the right size, and the letterpressed pencil on the cover reminds me of being in school.

Happy Monday, everyone. Did you have a good weekend? I hope the weather was nice where you are. We had a grey and rainy day on Saturday, the kind perfect for staying in and watching a movie. Yesterday, I dug out a few of my design and type books to study the form of letters and numbers. I thought it would help with my lettering. I stumbled upon this page of numbers that caught my eye. Numbers are truly one of my favourite things. I always notice numbers and odd number combinations. What's your favourite or lucky one? (Mine is 6.)

Naturally, I went in search for numbers to see what I could find; some delicate, some bold, and some simply spectacular. I found these lovely numbered napkin rings in BROOKLYNrehab's Etsy shop. I love that they do double duty as placeholders and napkin rings. They remind me a bit of Janine's. Being that it's almost July, including a calendar might seem a bit odd. But this Calendreco perpetual wall calendar found at See Jane Work is good for now, later, or even years from today. We've been looking for something to add some graphic punch to the studio walls and this may be it! If not, these Helvetica Iconic panels from B&N Industries will have to do. Who am I kidding? They're pretty fantastic, aren't they? Texture and typography: always my favourite combination! It makes such a statement but still isn't loud, which is perfect.

This charming little necklace now comes in silver! I also really love this bag.

Kathryn and I are excited to see this. We're always suckers for a good love story.

I don't know about you, but I'm so happy that Friday is finally here! Though I'm not quite sure what to do with my time this weekend: relax or get things done? Hopefully I'll fit in both. What do you hope to get done this weekend? I hope to pick up some more mini donuts, plain and simple. There have been a few fairs and the like in the city lately, and the best part about them for me is always the mini donuts. They're sugar coated joy in bite-sized pieces. But have you noticed? They're only delicious for a short period of time. All the more reason to shove my face full of them.

Never one to pass up inspiration in all its glorious forms, I let the donuts guide me today. I suppose it's because I thought about how none of them are perfect circles, which led me to circles in general. So many good things in life are round. And there's something so visually pleasing about circles. Continual, connected... or maybe I like them because, let's face it, the lack of corners, the seamless boundary it creates, just makes me smile. There's also something very playful about them, don't you think? What's your favourite shape? Bonus points for fun answers like "rhombus".

red white and black

With Canada Day coming up next week, red seems to be popping up everywhere. It is one of those colours that I don't seem to have a lot of, in my wardrobe or my decor. As much as I love the graphic quality of straight up black and white, sometimes it's just that much better with a touch of red. Since our sofa is a dark charcoal grey, it lends itself to many different accent colours. I'm starting to think that black, white and red might be a good way to change things up.

I love Anna Svanfeldt's work and her 2008 Fialena collection for Ikea is no exception. It's been in my favourites for a while and the only problem is choosing a favourtie! If I could order every design of Erica Wakerly's wallpaper, I think I would. They are all fabulous, but I especially love this fan pattern. It reminds me of string art. This Joel Dewberry fabric is available in Fabric Flair's etsy shop. I'm quite enjoying the bits of red and am thinking it would make a great toss cushion. Along with Anna Svanfeldt, Anna Salander has a great collection available through Ikea. This black and white pattern might get my top vote, althought it would be nice paired with the red version as well.

This is lovely, and as it just so happens, fits nicely into today's colour scheme :)

I revisited the efforts of my pack rat ways, again. Oh, the things you find when you dig around! A bag full of Letraset and Letraset-like letters. They're old and scratched up, but I like that they're not pristine and perfect. I actually have no idea what to do with them. Any suggestions? Maybe create some falling letter art like these.

I love type so much, and when it comes to prints, it's easy to find ways to incorporate it into a space. But I got a little curious as to what other ways you could bring the written word home. This make yourself at home rug by John Pour Home is made of hand-cut felt and comes in a plethora of colours and sayings. Better watch your step! I was thinking of something like this think sign, from Cox & Cox, in the studio. Keeping the walls the same creamy white plays up the interesting shadows, don't you think? Like looking at clouds, maybe it'll help spark some ideas. Last but not least, is this very cool Come In/Go Away doormat over at Generate Design. Funny how an ear here and a tail there can create a whole new way of reading something. I kept turning my head to the side, not quite believing it was the same doormat. (A major plus is that there's free shipping within the U.S. and Canada on most items!)

We've been working on a few things that we'll tell you about soon! And I had one of these in hamburger form when I was little!

Hello friends! I hope you all had a nice weekend and that all the great dads out there (including mine!) had a relaxing father's day. It was very warm and humid all weekend yet I had a craving for some rice pudding. Is that weird? Oh well, it was delicious either way! I've only just come around to rice pudding, I think it was one of those things that I just thought I didn't like but hadn't really given it a chance.

And since I'm now hooked on the classic rice pudding, I wondered what other kinds of sweet treats could be created with rice. It was all over once I started looking through all the delicious options over at Martha Stewart. Doesn't the Chocolate-Hazelnut Rice Pudding look sinfully good?! I'm reaching for a glass of milk already! One review referred to the Ricotta Cake as rice pudding in cake form. I don't know about you, but that makes me want to try it. If cake isn't your thing, how about a tart shell filled with rice pudding? The tarts with blood oranges look like a wonderful summer dessert.

Speaking of tarts, I'm wondering how this turned out. It sounds yummy :)

Since it's Friday, I thought I'd take a break from the usual for a little summer fun! As I mentioned on Wednesday, the temperatures have been feeling a lot like summer this week. It is quite a change from what we were getting just a few days ago. Here in Winnipeg the start of the season is marked by the arrival of our largest summer fair – The EX. I remember being so excited as a kid because once The EX had arrived in town it meant that there were only a few more days until school was out!

Do you remember the anticipation of summer vacation and how hard the last couple days of school were? I seem to recall that we didn't get a lot done in those last days and it was mainly playing games and being outdoors.

I gathered up some flickr images that evoke the same anticipation. And for someone that's not really a summer person, these photos even have me wishing I had two months of vacation again. I love the smell of carnivals, don't you? All the deep fried goodness and the cotton candy. To me, that's what summer smells like. Well, that and rain. And fresh cut grass. Do you have any traditions to kick off summer?

If you live somewhere that prevents you from having a garden, here's a fun project. And this little hideaway would be a great addition to any backyard, especially here since we tend to have a unbearably high number of mosquitos each summer.

Wouldn't these be yummy at a picnic? I must try them!

Last weekend, Kath and I did a little painting, replaced some hardware, and contemplated just what we were going to do next. We live in a fairly old building, (built in 1910, I believe) so we're not necessarily dealing with perfect conditions. In hopes of finding the best solution to covering up some things we just can't fix, I've been looking at different wall decor. I found this great image in an old issue of Inside Out of painted pieces of paper tacked to the wall. I love the hand-painted aspect which adds more character than using regular stock paint chips.

These aren't entirely feasible for a rental, but it doesn't mean they aren't visually stunning enough to share. Much like the impact of a wall covered in paint chips, I chose these for that wow factor. You all know that we've been dying to get some wallpaper up somewhere... anywhere! I really love this striped wallpaper treatment with the stripes running opposite under the chair rail. Being a fan of tile, I thought this patchwork of squares tiled bathroom was fantastic! I don't know if I could ever go multi-coloured but it looks great, don't you think? The last image is of the wonderful idea of treating your kitchenware like books. A library-inspired wall of shelving to showcase your goods, stacked neatly in their appropriate categories. All that's missing is a rolling ladder...

I stumbled upon this spectacular piece via the other Julie (of Up Up Creative) over at each penny pretty. Now, if I could just find a few thousand dollars today, I'll be set.

And because we all need to smile at least once today, you must see this and this cuteness.

Hello friends, how are you today? All of a sudden it feels like summer here. Hot and humid with the occasional thunderstorm. I forgot how much I missed sitting outside in the evening and going for a walk when it's dark but still warm out.

The other day I was going through some things and found this little package of old souvenir photographs that my mom found for me at a flea market a couple of years ago. They've just been waiting for the right place to be displayed. Dated August 2, 1952, this set is dedicated to the Will Rogers' Memorial Shrine in Colorado Springs. I also found a bit of background information on the Sanborn Sovenir Company who produced these photos. I love finding out the story behind vintage treasures.

Finding these old photographs again got me thinking about the history of objects in general. I seemed to have developed an aesthetic that has a retro feel. This is probably because to me, there is nothing better than finding an original vintage piece at a garage sale or thrift store.

And as much as I love having original vintage pieces, sometimes they are unattainable for one reason or another. So I wanted to share some of my favourite finds that may not be considered retro quite yet, definitely have a vintage feel. I always wanted a bean bag chair when I was growing up but never had one. These pouf ottomans by designer Nathan Turner might just be the next best thing. Featured in the June issue of Elle Decor, I am loving all the fun colours! Don't you just want to curl up with a good book in this Smock Chair by Patricia Urquiola? The Yves writing desk would be a dream to have, I can imagine this getting passed down through the family for years and years.

There are many occasions coming up that I'll need cards for, like birthdays and weddings. And sometimes, when simply saying hello is occasion enough. But I realized my stock of cards and notes is a bit low! It's always nice to have some solid general greetings on hand, since it's so easy for an event to slip my mind. I suppose I've been too busy practicing addressing the envelopes rather than worrying about that's going in them. We can fix that, can't we?

I haven't looked for cards and notes in a little while, so there were a lot of favourites for me. The Simple Birthday postcard from simplesong is perfect to have on hand. Easily customizable and great to send to anyone! I love that it's a postcard, as well. Something else I love is this Seraph Pink Letters note card set. The cards are edged in pink and the envelopes are charming, featuring a letterpressed flap. (It also comes in teal.) And with it coming up this weekend, I thought I'd share a cute Father's Day card I found. When I think of my dad, I think of mustaches. Mainly because ever since I was little, I've told him to shave his off, as I believe he looks much more handsome without it. They have a nice selection of Dad-friendly cards at Egg Press. Yesterday, I was looking for a business card. (I remember liking the font it was set in.) Just one business card, and I ended up making a mess, looking through every little thing I had trying to find it. I've organized quite a few things: my CD's, magazines, books. I even sat down one day and added album art to every one of my albums in iTunes. But there remains quite a bit to sort out. Luckily I picked up some People Tracker pages from R+H so that, at the very least, I'll have my contacts organized!

Whether it's a place for the little things, or a larger storage solution for a space, there are some great finds out there! And there are some to suit any aesthetic. These adorable 70s Elephant Pots spotted over at Present&Correct can store desk staples like pushpins and paperclips or even loose change. I think you need playful things like these in the office! For a fanciful solution to your notes and mail, there's this pretty little Brocade Letter Holder. (There are other brocade office products at See Jane Work, so be sure to take a look!) Finally, I found this Orient Express Storage Trunk at Graham and Green. It adds a charm and hints at a dream of far-off places. Sort of romantic, don't you think? I'm in need of storage in my bedroom, and finding a piece just right has been hard. Now I think I'll have an eye out for something like this piece.

Question: does anyone else love watching So You Think You Can Dance like Kath and I do? I don't think I can dance. I know I can't; It's catastrophic at times.

Also, who else thinks Anabela's new spectacles are just perfect for her? I could never rock those frames.

Good morning friends. How is your week so far? It has been quite grey and rainy this week so when I found this fun vintage necklace at an antique shop the other day it brightened my spirits. I had been searching for a yellow necklace since last spring but never found quite what I was looking for. Then when I spotted this little beauty hanging amongst the other colours I automatically walked over and picked it up. And it was only five dollars! It was a good day. I hope the sun is shining on you today.

Since it's almost officially summer I thought I'd leave out the black (for the most part) and find some things that utilize cyan, magenta and yellow. I think I've mentioned how Julie and I are big fans of The Small Stakes. We always find something we like, one of our current favourites is the poster for School of Seven Bells/Black Moth Super Rainbow. It's a prettier version of a colour wheel. How great is this Holga Starter Kit CMY? Have fun tinting your photographs with yellow, red, or blue! I can imagine entire weekends could be consumed with experimenting. And if that's not enough, you can dream in technicolor with the Origami Blossom bedding from Urban Outfitters. This bedding would be great to liven up a bedroom at the lake.

Ever since we got back from our trip, we've been a bit preoccupied with all things home decor for the apartment. Things are starting to feel like they're headed in the right direction of what we want. But just as we think we're getting somewhere, there's a million other things on the to do list! We've been racking our brains trying to sort out our dining room. My family never really used ours except for special occasions; something I'd like to rectify with ours. We have the table, (a very simple Danish teak find) but we're at a loss as to the rest of the space. This is a call for help!

Our dining table will most likely serve as an 'everything' table. We want to be able to hang out, brain storm, and chow down in the same space. Do you use your dining room formally? Or is it a more casual spot? I gathered a few different looks and hopefully you can sound in with what you think. I think currently, ours would look most like the last image, (bottom right) seeing as we have that aqua chair! It's a bit of a mishmash right now, which is fine. We like character and personality that comes with mixing styles. It also makes it more relaxed, don't you think? Also, what are your feelings on lighting? (Pendant, lamps, sconces?) I'd love to know what you have in your dining room.

Side note, that fortune cookie pictured above is not for consumption. (It's porcelain!) It's my new favourite thing I got here.

knock on wood

Last weekend my mom found this lovely vintage table with plans to strip and paint it. I think it will look great painted, but as I looked at it more I started to really like the worn patina it has. I've been debating on how much natural wood I want in my bedroom as I already have two dressers of different types and don't want to over do it. I do love the feeling natural wood creates in a space. It always seems more inviting and relaxed to me.

Of course this led me to search out more objects that showcase the natural grain and colour of wood. As I've mentioned before I am still looking for a bedside clock that isn't hideous. And since my search for the perfect vintage flip clock has proved unsuccessful thus far I have turned my attention to some gorgeous options from Furni. This desk clock is one of my favourites, but check out all of their clocks here.

There is something about turned wood that begs to be held. These Keyaki wood tea cups are no execption. I can imagine a warm cup of tea nestled in the palm of my hand. The zig zag pattern of this fun cedar box would look great on a desk top or side table. And this tealight candelabra designed by Kai-wei Hsu is definitely being added to my wishlist. After a couple of summers off from having any weddings to go to, I now have one to attend in August. So, I was looking through my closet and realized that I really do not have a very good dress wardrobe. I mean it's actually pretty sad. Aside from a couple of bridesmaid dresses and a few other casual options, there is nothing that I can wear to a formal event. Now it isn't all bad, since this gives me an excuse to look for a new dress (or two)!

I decided to spend a little time searching out some dresses online to see if I was drawn to a certain style more than others. And the verdict is...I'm not. I had bookmarked about 15-20 dresses that were all very different in look and feel. I guess I'm going to have to get out there and start trying some on!

In the meantime, I thought I'd share some of my favourites with you. I really love the folds and pleating in the frock dress by acne jeans. And I've always enjoyed a good boat neck. I don't wear a lot of fuchsia, but when I saw this Raspberry Perfection Dress I couldn't take my eyes off of it. It would indeed be perfect for a summer wedding. I also can't get enough of The Canary Dress
from Holly Stalder. A yellow dress is definitely something I'd like to have in my wardrobe! Finally there is the Honeycomb dress. I've had this in my favourites for a while now. It's just so beautiful to look at, don't you think?

While cleaning up folders on my computer, I realized that I've collected dozens and dozens of images over the past few months. Not of things but of words. I have myself a stash of quotes and sayings, lyrics and phrases from all over; straight-up type staring back at you telling you everything you needed to know or wanted to hear. They're nothing if not simple statements of those things you can easily lose sight of. And I seem to have them hidden everywhere, like secret post-it notes to keep me going and keep me grounded. What sayings or mantras do you enjoy?

The white storage box has eluded us no longer! Yes, Julie and I were very excited to find The Container Store in Minneapolis. We finally have the all white storage boxes that we've seen everywhere but were never able to attain. Until now! I think I would've been happy if these had been all that we came back with. It's not weird to get this excited over cardboard boxes, right?

When I'm in need of some organizational inspiration I head over to Chez Larsson, I just love Benita's style and am in awe of how crisp and clean yet very relaxed and inviting their family home is. One of my favourite spaces is this little craft area.

Another one of my favourite places for inspiration is of course, Livingetc. I always want to bookmark every image, and this visit was no exception. I am somewhat of a neat freak and like things to look organized and clean. So I thought I'd search out some ideas that weren't neccessarily "neat" looking to help me become more open to the possibility of a little messiness. I've always really liked the concept of open shelving for a kitchen pantry, but of course the fact that everything can be seen is still kind of scary. Perhaps I need to ease into things with just a shelf or two. I've had the same feeling about staggered shelving. They seem a little untidy to me, but I think I'm coming around to them in this hallway. And even though at first glace this room looked a bit disorganized, I immediately fell in love with it. The chalkboard drawer fronts are amazing!

Happy Monday, and hello June! Did you all have a nice weekend? I'm still sorting through purchases, finding the right spot for everything. While looking around, I also find spots for things I didn't get. (I hate when that happens!) I finally got myself a Fleur De Lys glass for my nightstand, and this adorable Lucy vase for spring flowers. We also got some other mugs and glasses. And I noticed how many vessels I had acquired. Which, of course, got me thinking...

Vessels make up most of the housewares I buy. And why not? And from the ever lovely Bailey Doesn't Bark, this Flamingos and Trees Tea Set has caught my eye. Hand decorated in all its gold splendor, I'd love to have my morning tea from this! You know I had to find something quirky to include in today's finds and I found it in this Ceramic Pig Planter by Fruit Fly Pie. He also comes in orange and reminds me of both a piggie bank and a Chia pet...

We're waiting patiently for one of these.

And, it's true. Love actually is all around. The thought definitely brightened my day.

Another week, another month; time just won't slow down these days. This is the last post of May and I didn't even see it coming! June seems to be quite promising though, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what else it brings. Don't you? I was having a snack before dividing up some tulips into some vases when I noticed the pink and blue. It clicked that I seem to be attracted to cooler tones lately, especially blues and pinks together. There's something refreshing about it to me.

It's no surprise that they go well together, but I'm wondering why I'm so drawn. It's a striking duo; still fresh and fun, but with an air of maturity. Now, it's a well known fact that I do, in fact, judge books by their covers. And if nothing else, I'm quite taken with the cover of INFLUENCES. Though I'm fairly certain I can learn a thing or two from reading it, as well! I posted something about a giveaway on Creature Comforts the other day, which featured a prize of a frazier + wing mobile from fawn&forest. I adore the 20" henry mobile. Fingers crossed that this fantastic creation will hang in our sunroom someday... Over at Ruche, I spotted this cute pink hostas empire tank top. I think it's perfect for a sunny summer lunch date! And for those special occasions or a night on the town, there's the stunning f ban.do, part of the affordable heart by ban.do line.

Last week while we were in Minneapolis there were a couple of days when the temperature soared to above 30 degrees celsius. Back here at home we normally don't see those kind of temperatures until the middle of summer in July and August. Needless to say, it was a bit of a shock. But it got me thinking of those long, hot, days of summer. The kind that don't seem to cool off, even at night. The kind of days that are made for playing hooky and lounging around with a refreshing drink.

To me, fruit is always something I associate with summer. It seems that my favourite summer memories involve being with family and friends sitting outside sipping on slushies or having ice cream and laughing the evening away. I wanted to find some fun new summer recipes to try out and these Honey poached peaches from Tara over at seven spoons look so delicious. The ricotta and pistachios are making me drool! Strawberry shortcake is definitely a summer must. As soon as I saw this recipe on smitten kitchen I knew I had to give it a try. Don't they look heavenly?! I'm always on the look out for a new drink recipe to try and this Tropical Ginger Punch might be next on the list. With two of my favourite juices, orange and pineapple, I'm sure it will be a lovely afternoon pick me up.

Hello and good morning! How have you all been? What have you been up to? I feel like I've got a lot of catching up to do. The trip was so refreshing and the weather seems to be playing its part as well! I see Kath filled you in on some of our finds. We both went a little crazy at russell+hazel and finally picked up some desk accoutrements, including this bird magnet and Lamy fountain pen that I've been coveting for a year or two. Our dream studio space is coming together! (And I didn't actually scribble that. It's a t-shirt I got from UO!)

I thought I'd use that as a jumping off point and search out office goods to adorn your desk. This Perpetual Desk Calendar is something I've had my eye on. I love paper calendars, of course, but the charm of a vintage flip calendar is more than I can bear sometimes! The same goes for this Folle Classic Stapler. Though it's definitely more than I'd like to spend on a stapler. But that's alright because Kath and I saw this one at The Container Store for much less! Something else I've been coveting are these gold (or silver) Kikkerland Stick Pens. You can get a 5 pack of gold ones from Fred Flare, which would look lovely in that cup on your desk, don't you think?

Under serious consideration for purchase right now are these fantastic Numbered Desk Dishes. A shot of red typographic loveliness is just what a desk needs. And a little wrap station could use these Japanese Masking Tapes. They come in some delightful colours, too! And finally, there are the Scriptorium Paperweights. I saw these at Anthropologie and spelt a few words out with them. (Because I do stuff like that.) Of course, I adore them for the typographic aspect, as well as the practicality!

Hello friends! We had a great trip! It was so good, we almost didn't want to leave. But it feels good to be back in this space and to start catching up on what you've all been up to. As much as I love traveling, sometimes nothing can compare to coming home to your own bed.

And what better way to make your bed more inviting than to add a bit of personality? I fell in love with these yellow Marimekko bed linens at Crate & Barrel as soon as I saw them. I wanted to add a bit of fun to my bedding without going too crazy, so I got the pillow cases, and they're the perfect hit of pattern and colour. Julie spotted this throw while browsing and it has a great texture and softness. And to liven up the sofa we picked up a couple of these cushions from the Ikea Stockholm collection. It's really starting to feel like the apartment is coming together. I can envision the final look of each space and can't wait until it's full reality.

As I was going through our blogroll trying to catch up on last week's happenings, I spotted these wonderful graphics by Chad Hagen on Grain Edit. Aren't they beautiful? I love the nonsense element as well.

We've made it to the end of the week! Tomorrow will be our first official day of holidays. Wow, it's been a long time since I've been able to say that! We'll be kicking off the weekend with a show by The Stills at a local club, and then hitting the road for Minneapolis! I'm really glad we get to spend a bit of time there as the past few times I've been there it's only be for a couple of days. It'll be so fun to explore all the galleries and paper good studios.

Since we won't be posting next week (we do hope to be posting some photos via flickr during the trip though) I thought I'd give you all some new (or maybe not so new to you) reading material. LITTLE JANE ST. is the work of Alarna Zinn and showcases the efforts of her boutique stationery studio along with great finds and personal touches. And there's an online shop as well! You should be warned that milk and honey cafe is filled with scrumptious photos that you won't be able to resist. You'll want to immediately start baking! Sarah Yoon does a great job of photographing and sharing all the yummy recipes she trys. I am dying to try these. I've been following Whitney's daily wear posts over on her flickr for a while now, and she always has the best outfits! Her blog Darling Dexter shares more of her great taste. Bespoke Press follows the daily ins and outs of the letterpress boutique of the same name. If you love letterpress as much as we do, you'll be a regular visitor. Jane of simple + pretty keeps things just that. Of course we love all the white space :). Last but certainly not least, I've been enjoying the daily musings of Kate from for me, for you. Her Bits of My Weekend posts are always so fun and she has the best sense of humor.

Whew, that was a lot. Now we're off to officially begin our holiday!

as pretty as a picture

Hello, friends. This week seems to have gone by quickly. I actually don't have a problem with that this time, because it means we're closer to our trip! While I was looking for my extra memory cards, (hopefully I'll put them to good use and take a lot of pictures) I came across some old negatives. If you know where you can get your digital prints handed to you in a cool paper bag like the ones for these negs, then count yourself lucky. It's strange to think how long it's been since I've handled negatives. I used to almost everyday. Dear, sweet photography. What would I do without you?

Which leads me to my Flickr favourites! I think I used to do this a little more often, didn't I? It's never hard finding enough favourites for a post. Sometimes, I find myself clicking from one person to another for hours on Flickr. There's just so much fantastic imagery out there. I've been pretty high-spirited these past few weeks, what with the upcoming vacation, so I gathered some images that made my insides warm and fuzzy. It translates to thinking happy thoughts, and then magically, you're happy. Sometimes, don't you find it's as simple as that? What good thoughts are you thinking lately?

One of my favourite things about trips is looking at maps to figure out which route you're going to take. I remember having a conversation with a friend about the roadway system and how he was amazed at both the complexity and genius of it all. Up until that point I had never really thought about it that much. But when you stop to think about how one road turns into another which turns into another and another after that, it really is kind of crazy that you can get to so many places from the same starting point.

There is something about taking all those lines and shapes and turning them into type that fascinates me. Ever since I first heard Paula Scher talk about her maps I have been so intrigued by them. The time and paitience that goes into each one is overwhelming. But in the end it must be so satisfying to have created something so beautiful. This map of St. Petersburg is equally as beautiful and is created entirely out of quotes about the Russian capital, which is pretty amazing. I am also loving the more simplified neighbourhood maps by Jenny of Ork Posters. If you haven't checked them out, you really should. I love all the titles and this one especially.

These are pretty cool too.

Hello and happy Monday, everyone. I hope you all had a nice weekend, and not to mention a wonderful Mother's Day! I spent the weekend in, watching movies and looking through some magazines that just arrived in the mail. I saw this pattern in a story in Print. (Available for download as a wallpaper here.) I adore line work, whether organic and sketched or clean and precise.

I gathered a few of my favourites for you, today. Julia Rothman's Pieces wallpaper for Hygge & West is a perfect example. Upon closer inspection, you can see the wonderful line quality of the pattern. I quite enjoy the illustration on this Hair sketchbook by Seraph. The lines flow like waves and the shimmering gold only seems to highlight the curves of each stroke. Last but not least, is the Undulation letterpress card by Meander. Like so many obsessive line doodles we've all made, this more refined version also has textural appeal in a lovely aqua hue.

feeling light-headed

I've always felt I have somewhat of a comfort zone of particular styles or colours. I'm one of those people you'll see wearing dark clothing in the middle of summer. (Even predominantly black outfits once in a while!) But lately, I've been drawn to the lighter side of things. Pale shades of pink and green; dreamy washes of colour.

By looking at today's finds, you see what I mean, right? Seeing them all together is such a pretty sight. After perusing J.Crew, it was clear that they had just what I was looking for; flats in glowing metallics and Easter egg colours. I also love this shimmering medallion journal I saw over at Anthropologie. Perfect on the bedside table for jotting down that strange dream I had of playing cards with the Backstreet Boys. (I know. Weird.) And now that we're into spring weather, (though not today, unfortunately) I need to stock up in light spring cardigans! And J.Crew had an abundance of those too, like the Jackie Cardigan. Seeing them stacked like that makes me want them in every colour!

I've been coveting this Lomo Diana Dreamer Camera for a few months now. Quirky and retro, I can see many lazy summer day photos taken with it. I can also see many cute summer outfits with this pirate stripe scarf from Topshop. Scarves are just perfect for tying together any outfit. Finally, I had to include this small peach paper bowl by Up in the Air Somewhere, one of my current Etsy favourites. I've never seen paper mache so beautiful! The shop has many fantastic pieces so be sure to have a look.

This makes me wish it were next weekend; the weekend before our roadtrip!

How has your week been so far? Mine has been a blur, and here we are at Thursday once again. I am getting excited for our little road trip, thank you for all your great suggestions yesterday! Julie and I have both been to Minneapolis a few times but it's always worth going back. Although I haven't travelled extensively through the United States, I think it might be one of my favourite American cities. What is your favourite city destination?

After my post last week about street photography of the 50's and 60's I started thinking about current photography and how there are so many talented photographers out there. I have loved photography for as long as I can remember. I could sit and flip through photographs for days and days and never get bored. There is something so interesting about being able to see how others view the world around them. And even though two photos can look very similar they might be from opposite ends of the earth.

So I've gathered a few of my favourites to share with you. But there are so many more that deserve to be seen, I'm sure I'll be posting more in the months to come. One of the things that draws me to a photo is composition, and these ladies all have great eyes for space. And the nice thing is their work is available at affordable prices so everyone can be lucky enough to have it hanging in their home.

This is one of my most favourite things to do. What is it you ask? Why, it's planning a trip! I'm making a little check list of things we'll need to bring and things we could do while we're there. We're headed on a road trip down to Minneapolis in a few weeks! If any of you dear readers are from the Twin Cities or knows of something we should see while we're there, please let us know! Only when I need it do I ever remember that I don't have many travel things. I actually don't have many on-the-go type things in general. I've always wanted a travel case. This Globe-Trotter Centenary vanity case I spotted at J Crew is fantastic. (Though very much out of my price range!) I love the traditional look with the pop of yellow which is very now. Etsy is usually where I keep my eye on vintage travel clocks, looking for the perfect one. This Travel Ben Clock is quite charming, don't you think? Finally, there's the V&A Vaccuum Flask. It features a gorgeous William Morris Cray print. Maybe, if they're in stock in store, I can pick one up from Paper Source myself!

Good morning, friends. Hope you all had a fabulous weekend. As I write this, my ears are still ringing from a Bloc Party concert Julie and I went to Sunday night. It was great! I highly recommend seeing them live if you have the chance.

I picked up this wonderful print of three little chihuahuas a few weeks ago at an antique shop. I am a huge animal lover and had seen it in the shop a couple of times. By the third visit, I decided I had to have it. And I love it! I just can't get enough of these guys.

For today's picks I thought I'd share some of my favourite animal related pieces. I'm loving this new painting by Matte Stephens. I really need to add one of his works to my collection! This tiger stamp from Studio Violet is another great find. The possibilities are running through my mind like crazy. I'm sure this would be as fun for adults as it would be for kids. And have you seen this amazing puzzle? It's based on a carpet design by Alexander Girard. I'd be tempted to hang it on the wall and not let anyone play with it!

This new plate by Camilla is so charming. And I would've loved to have these when I was kid!

Hello May! Seeing as how I'm not really a summer person, I think May is my favourite "summer" month. The weather is usually the perfect temperature for me, you can still wear a light jacket but it's warm enough to sit outside and enjoy some ice cream. And the sun always feels so nice on your skin. What's your favourite summer month?

As I mentioned in Wednesday's post, May is going to be a busy month. But it's all good busy, and one thing Julie and I are looking forward to is finally taking a bit of a vacation as neither of us have gone anywhere since we finished school.

One thing about travelling that I love is staying in hotels, and looking at all the different options got me thinking about bringing the hotel experience to your own home. All you need is a few luxurious items to make you feel like you're on vacation even when you're not.

I am in love with the Symmetry Pillow from Horne. It may be a little too nice to use as a travel pillow, but it definitely adds a touch of elegance to any room. Aren't these Origami pillow covers gorgeous? With a 400 thread count I can imagine how soft they must be. You can fly anywhere with these vintage snack plates from Midwest Express Airlines. The ultimate luxury is having your own pair of cashmere travel slippers like these. These Orla Kiely towels make me happy. How could you not smile seeing them every morning? And finally, I am really liking the subtle stripes in the soho bedding from Designers Guild.

Do you know where I haven't been to in a while? The library. I really should go for a visit sometime soon. All those books, that wonderful smell, and some peace and quiet. I've been trying to dive into the classics and picked up Persuasion a little while ago, but nothing beats a library book. Any suggestions? I've been in a reading mood as of late. Call it Escapism, unwinding; whatever you'd like. But sometimes, it's nice to see things through someone else's eyes.

This got me thinking of all my favourite things, which got me looking into my favourites. I did a little browsing through some of my hearted Etsy shops and picked out some things that put a smile on my face, like only a favourite thing or place can. First off, we have these fantastic Feelgood cards from Up Up Creative. With ideas like "enjoy the sky" and "run like a kid; with no goal and no self-consciousness", they'll remind you of all the small joys in portable format! Next is this La Vie Est Belle print from The Love Shop. Life is beautiful, typography is beatiful, so this print just makes a whole lot of sense to me! (I also adore there "Love is the new black" print.) Finally, there's this gorgeous Caoba top by Zelaya. Made of organic cotton, this simple front top showcases a stunning low back. Feminine and the perfect amount of sexy, don't you think?

This week seems to be flying by. I can't believe it's almost May, and it's going to be one busy month! Concerts, interviews, and even a little trip. It seems now that spring has fully sprung, so has everything else! And I'm excited to report that I spotted my first garage sale sign last weekend, I can't wait to get out there and start hunting for treasures.

Over the weekend, Julie and I picked up a tentative lighting option for the bathroom (we still have to see if it can be installed properly). We chose a mini chandelier to add a bit of glamour to the room. It got me thinking about adding a touch of sparkle to other areas of the apartment. And as I was browsing through the Graham and Green site, I kept mentally bookmarking all the great pieces they have.

For some reason I tend to think of mirrors as feminine, but this faceted mirror is pretty without being too girly. And I love how the different angles reflect the light. I also really like this Francois Ghost option, and it comes in two sizes. I can't get enough of the Silver Ball Chandelier, it's just so beautiful without being fussy or overdone. I always equate Dressing tables with glamour, getting ready to go out and putting on make up and jewelry make any girl feel special. The feminine lines of the Jamie Lady Table are so elegant.

I'm digging the vintage feel of this. And this just cracks me up!

Good morning, everyone! Did you all have a nice weekend? Kath and I did a little bargain hunting. Just another reason why I love the spring! Spring means spring cleaning, garage sales, and flea markets. It also means yummy, delicious fruit. Strawberries, cherries, melon... what's your favourite?

I decided to look up some tasty berry recipes. This warm berries and dumplings recipe I stumbled upon on Joy the Baker looks scrumptious and simple. I can't resist the appeal of warm berries. If you're looking for something creamy, the vanilla custard cream with raspberries recipe I found at Veggie Wedgie may be just what you're looking for. Another simple recipe and it's also vegan friendly! I thought these bite-sized lemon cream and blackberry tartlets found at life @ justthere were worth a look. It's a little more involved than the other two recipes but I'm sure it's worth it! Do you have any good berry recipes?

Is it just me, or am I the only one a little surprised that it's Friday? Boy, that was fast! I feel like once I finish this post, I'll look up and it'll be May. I'm really enjoying the sun we're finally getting. It's like it makes everything work and feel better and I feel like creating more. I've been doing a lot of hand lettering lately. Whenever I have a moment, I write on whatever I can, trying to find my own rhythm. I'm not sure what it is yet or how it'll come out. All in due time, I suppose!

There are people who do such amazing things, so carefully executed and precise, it leaves me in awe with my jaw on the floor. I only hope to be able to do anything half as good one day. It makes me want to hand letter something on my wall and go to town! Except I have no idea what it would say. Is there something you'd like to learn how to do?

Hello, how are you today? It finally feels like spring, and that always means the end of the school year is near. Lately, I've found myself nostalgic for the past and kind of wishing I was heading off to a class each morning. I was never a big history buff, but when it comes to the history of photography, I can't get enough. I picked up this book a few weeks ago and am really enjoying flipping through the pages.

The street photographers of the 50's and 60's are fascinating to me. I could look at their images for days on end. Two of my favourites are Garry Winogrand and Lee Friedlander. Part of the reason I like them so much is because they could capture images I will never be able to. The era, the glamour, the laid back attitude. It was all so cool. It would've been interesting to be a part of that time in history. I've always thought that if I could live in a different era it would be the 50's. What era would you have liked to experience?

Hello, friends! How has this week been treating you all, thus far? Kath and I took in an acoustic show the other night (with another favourite Canadian band, Metric). It was a nice way to kick off the week. (That, in addition to our victory over indecision with picking a colour for the bathroom!) Anyway, I rocked my new ikat scarf that night and kind of fell even more in love with it. Ikat is something I never really thought I could incorporate, but I've pretty much pulled a complete 180 at this point!

It really wasn't all that hard to gather today's ikat finds for you. (Maybe that's why there are six!) I'm liking this Ikat Slipper Chair from U.O. It's something I'd want for my bedroom. The light and neutral colour will allow it to play well with any other patterns. I also adore this Ikat scarf from The Limited. The perfect spring scarf in some lovely spring colours! You could also incorporate ikat into a room with this Ikat silk and linen cushion cover. It's graphic but not too bold as the dying softens the effect.

Your feet can even get in on the action with these Ikat Skimmers from Anthropologie. They come in these lovely jewel tones, and they're silk! Our rug search continues. We've been looking for neutral, but if you're feeling a bit daring, you'll love this Ikat Blue rug by Madeline Weinrib Atelier. She has a few ikat rugs, actually. So be sure to check them out! She also has these fantastic Lace Ikat clutches. I could only pick one, but they come in so many variations and colours. Makes me one one of each... if only I won the lottery.

I've really been loving all the bright colours and floral prints that have been showing up everywhere. Usually floral prints aren't my thing, but with all the bright colours I just can't get enough! I was in the grocery store and spotted this lonely bunch of carnations sitting by themselves. How could I resist? I couldn't. And now everytime I walk by the dining room table I am a little bit happier.

Julie and I finally decided on a grey for the bathroom and spent part of the weekend painting. It's not quite done, but it's getting there. We were originally thinking of yellow accessories, but now we are leaning towards magenta. Perhaps there should be a bit of both!

The magenta and gold combination of this poster from Sparkle Power is so cheerful and the message is just plain fun. I think this floral scarf by Betsey Johnson needs to be added to my wishlist. I am especially loving it paired with black. And if there is one thing I alwasy seem to have multiples of, it's change purses. This extra large version from oktak has a wonderfully colourful print with a touch of retroness.

Speaking of colour, this makes me swoon.

Happy Friday friends! We've had a few bright sunny days here this week and I think it's been putting a smile on just about everyone's face. It kind of makes me feel like this. And with the snow finally gone, it's time to get outside! I love the old fashioned romanticism of picnics, don't you?

These reusable sandwich wrappers are such a great idea. Made out of durable oil cloth, they just have to be wiped clean and they're ready to go. And they come in a variety of patterns, including this one for the special guy in your life. Pop bottles may not around as much anymore, but I would find some just so I could take one of these fun bottle openers on my picnic. I'm not sure which one is my favouite though, the elephant or the owl. Now I have to admit, I have a crush on this vintage 60's picnic set. Isn't it great?!

If you all haven't noticed, I'm a bit of a sucker for the romantic. I think on some level I'm making up for the years of being a bit of a tomboy when I was younger. Whether it's for its subtle nuances or on an epic scale, I adore touches of romance in everything. And with the warm, sunny weather we've had lately, I'm starting to feel it in the air. Having a bit of the romantic in your life must be a good thing, right?

I've rounded up some things to cover the bases, whether it's for you or your home. I adore the Cirrus Duvet over at Anthropologie. It comes in 3 colours, and makes me want to start a career in lying in bed all day. I've had this Girl In The Flowers print at Little Paper Planes bookmarked for a while now. A lovely little print with spring like colour and appeal, don't you think? Next is the Paris Romance silk bag from Shecological. Ever since I saw it on the front page of Etsy, I keep going back to it. If I go to Paris, I'm taking this with me!

These Rustic Roses by Allen Company Inc caught my eye when Joy posted about them. They'd be sweet in your home, and wonderful as a wedding bouquet. Then, we have the Sweet Olive Shift dress at Anthropologie. Romantic, but simple, this metallic linen dress has me smitten. Finally, I headed over to J Crew and stumbled upon this Silk-ribbon chain-link necklace. Also available with a black ribbon, the chain adds a nice edge to curb the frilly-ness a big ribbon can bring. A great way to dress up a casual spring outfit!

Hello friends, hope you're having a lovely week so far. One of my favourite patterns is stripes. And as I looked through my things I found that almost my entire collection of striped objects were in grey scale. It's funny how we're drawn to certain things without realizing it. All acquired at different times and for different reasons, yet all very similar. I guess it just shows how much I love black, white and grey!

Nothing says happy like a bounty of rainbow coloured stripes! And to contrast my own collection of monotone stripes I wanted to find some fun colour variations. This cuckoo clock designed by Diamantini & Domeniconi is so great! Cuckoo clocks used to frighten me when I was younger, but this one looks so friendly and that tiny bird sitting in his little perch isn't scary at all. I've always liked the idea of an afghan, and I'm especially drawn to this one. And, it's on sale! Have you checked out Wallpaper LAB yet? There are some really interesting designs. This one by Markus Linnenbrink is amazing! Sigh, I think I'm in love.

Hello and good morning! How are you all doing today? Are some of you enjoying a day off today? Kathryn and I had a nice Friday off, and spent the weekend looking through UPPERCASE magazine and heading out to faculty's annual open house. It got me thinking of all the things I enjoy and adore that are made or from Canada. We have amazing artists and talents here and I thought I'd highlight a few of them today. Bookhou always comes to mind for me, with their hand printed linen products. I love their cloud flat bag, perfect for toting your things to the lake. And though they've recently shifted away from studio work, the pieces by coe&waito are simple yet striking. From cute birds, to quirky pine cones and lovely tableware (like these scalloped dishes), their stoneware has garnered a lot of recognition. Then there's the stunning jewellery of Kate Szabone. An Etsy favourite of mine since...well, forever, her pieces are the definition of how I love my jewellery. As you can see in with her Shades of Pink ring set, her pieces are sweetly sophisticated with their simple lines and adorned with shimmering gemstones.

Sometimes, when I'm looking around Etsy, or perusing a thrift store, I see something from my childhood that I don't remember wanting so badly until that very moment. Last weekend, while scoping out the usual suspects, I saw this xylophone. In my mind, I was freaking out. It was my favourite instrument to play in band when I was little. It was also something that seemed unattainable, magical, mythical, even. (They were always so grand! Where would one purchase such a thing, I wondered?) Now I have one! A tiny one, but a tiny glossy white one.

I thought it be fun, with all the Easter egg hunts and floppy fuzzy bunny-ness going on this weekend, to revisit the simple loves of childhood. Uncomplicated, bright and whimsical items. I was always terrified to use piggy banks because I knew what I'd have to do to get the money one day. This Pear French Money Box from Three Potato Four would be hard to part with! I'd love it to add some playful yellow to plain shelves. Kaleidoscopes were a favourite with me and my friends, like this Kaleidoscope Deluxe from White Elephant Vintage. We could just watch the colours forever... such a dazzling sight! Finally, there's one thing that I've always wanted, but never had for some reason. This Tin Spinning Top would be a great quirky element to a room. (And not to mention, a lot of fun to play with. You know you would!)

I adore these and hope to be seeings some of these soon.

I had always wanted to try Peeps so I picked up a package yesterday. And the result? I don't think I like them. Actually that's not true, I know I don't like them. I guess it's not too much of a disappointment as they do look cute as a decoration. Although maybe if I made my own, like these (found via poppytalk) I might like them better. Do any of you feel strongly about Peeps, good or bad?

So moving on from birds to bunnies, I couldn't resist rounding up some fun bunny finds. I'm a big fan of sugar cookies so when I saw these sugar cookie bunnies I had to include them. I like the simplicity of no icing and having just the lovley pink ribbon as adornment. Julie bought this Bunnies card from Good On Paper Design a while ago and I'm thinking I should've bought one as well. Who wouldn't like to get a card with congratulatory bunnies? Isn't this snack pouch from downhomeamy a brillant idea?! Environmently friendly and oh so cute. Plastic containers can be cumbersome and take up a lot of space, and when this is empty you can just roll it up and toss it in your bag. Sometimes I just can't resist the allure of a softie. Cloudy Bunny is looking for a good home, along with his many friends over at stitchface. The only problem is deciding who to adopt!

If you all could see my childhood bedroom, you would know that I adore purple. It's wall to wall purple. I used to have a purple comforter, too. (I even tried to find myself a purple lamp while I was at it.) Since then, the urge to immerse myself with my favourite colours has subsided, but I still love the colour. It's only heightened now that Kathryn and I fell in love with a purple sofa. That's right, friends. A beautiful, comfy, deep violet sofa.

It got me thinking of how to incorporate purple into a space. It's a fantastic colour, but usually I think of it as an accent more than the feature hue. I was kind of surprised to find so many variants of its use that I actually liked. Subtle or striking, mod or traditional, purple seems to play very well with others. And as you can see, is often complimented by turquoise blues and chartreuse greens. It all looks so glamorous, doesn't it?Whether or not they're all my taste, they all look like wonderful rooms. I guess the 10 year old me was onto something! How do you feel about purple?

Hello Monday. Hope you all had a nice weekend. After what seemed like a never ending series of dull, grey days, the sun finally came out and made it feel like spring. I think being cooped up for so long has lead me to day dreams of travelling. If you could go anywhere, where would it be?

And since we're dreaming, I thought I would pick out a few fun and somewhat extravagant pieces of luggage. This Orla Kiely Wheelie is probably the most affordable on my list. The cute multi coloured car pattern will add a bit of whimsy to your travels. You'll be sure to stand out from the crowd with this bright Louis Vuitton Keepall. I've always thought there was something romantic about hat boxes, and this one from French 1946 is so chic and classic. I am loving the colours and pattern of this Emilio Pucci cosmetic bag. How great would it be to see this little burst of colour hiding in your luggage!

Do you remember Spirograph? I'm not sure if I knew what it was before I actually had one, but I remember thinking it was one of the best things on earth. Using different coloured pens to create amazing patterns...what could be better? Apparently it is still in production and they even have Spirograph Pens now. I think I might have to check them out for myself!

I used to love getting a new geometry set every year for school. Even though we didn't use them that much they always seemed to show up the next year with missing pieces. The protractor was my favourite. The compass always scared me a little. All the reminiscing sparked an urge to share some fun geometric finds. I think I might need to have this Snake Cube Puzzle from Three Potato Four. Isn't it great?! It also comes in black and white. I've had a crush on this rug from Madeline Weinrib for a long time. I love how simple and bold it is at the same time. This fabric from Cicada Studio would make fantastic pillows for spring. I'm really liking the grass green as an accent colour. And ever since I saw Nama Rococo's Random Geometry wallpaper posted in Anna's Flickr stream I've kept it in the back of my mind. One day I will have the perfect spot for it.

I've been thinking about colour a lot lately. It seems to come up more often than not. What colour for this thing or that? Blues catch my eye these days. As time goes, blue grows on me. I love anything with a shot of cobalt or sweet little turquoise details. Perhaps I'm dreaming of days with blue skies. Why? It snowed here... again! I hope things are nicer where you are!

Hello April, it's nice to see you again. It seems a few days off was just what the doctor ordered. Sometimes life gets in the way and we forget to take a break here and there. These last few weeks have been especially frustrating as winter just doesn't want to leave and everyone is itching to get outside and feel the sunshine again. But the days are getting longer so that's a good sign!

As we continue to gather inspiration for the apartment, I decided to look for lighting that would get my creativity flowing. I've always loved studying the way light is filtered through a space, so I guess it's no surprise that I am drawn to lighting that casts interesting shadows. At one point I thought about studying lighting design and even created a couple of my own lamps when I was in art school. I'm sure they would look very amateur now! I think it's nice to walk into a room and not see an obvious lamp or ceiling fixture, but rather an intriguing sculpture in its place. I could stare at any one of these for hours on end.

Hello, friends! My oh my, it feels like it's been forever! How have you been? I don't know about Kath, but a week away from the constant happenings on the computer was much needed. I think even my eyes are happier and rested! I did some reading to relax, and some searching for ideas. Our apartment, though much cozier than before, still lacks that certain je ne sais quoi. So we we thinking that wallpaper just might do it. I want wallpaper up somewhere so bad... the last time I encoutred it, it was bears of all sorts with an almost matching border.... I was 8, I didn't know any better. The game has changed since then!

I used to have timid taste when it came to wallpaper. Like Goldilocks, I was searching for one not too busy, not to plain, but one that was just right. But lately, I'm beginning to think you should go big or go home. Especially in this case, where we're only thinking of wallpapering a single wall or the strips of wall on either side of the fireplace... so why not go bold? It's a great chance to add personality to a room. I've been particularly drawn to papers with the aesthetic qualities of drawing and illustration. When repeated on a whole wall, the effect is really quite fantastic, don't you think? I picked out a few of my favourites to share with you. How do you feel about wallpaper?

Hello, friends! And hello spring! It's officially here, and actually sort of feels like it today. Whenever a season changes, I like getting something new that reminds me. Last weekend I bought this shimmery necklace and wanted to share it with you. It's my spring necklace. (Perhaps it's the bird?) Like the sparkle of the snow melting in the sun, it makes me smile. I can't wait to see what this new season brings. Just breathing in the air now leaves me feeling like something's about to change.

I decided to share some recent Etsy favourites of mine. I haven't done that in a while! These are just some things I keep going back to. I've adored Heather's teaspoon shot since she first posted it on Flickr! I'm so happy she made it a print. I've also had my eye on this vanilla morchella bag by morelle. A clean palette for spring, don't you think? (And the bow is so sweet.) Finally, this kimono smock by Emily Ryan has been calling out to me. I'm not one who can really wear things of this style, but if I could, it'd be in my closet right now... or I'd be wearing it. I actually want everything in her shop, so stop by for a look!

Next week, Kathryn and I will be taking a Spring Break of sorts. Just some time off to handle a few other things and recollect. So I have to admit, I am a hopeless romantic. I am not ashamed, I am in love with love. Maybe it's because I am eternally optimistic, but I always believe it will work out with the two main characters in movies. Even when I've seen the movie many times before and I know that it doesn't work out, I still find myself rooting for them. Needless to say, I was really excited when my casanova print arrived the other day! What better combination than the idea of love along with a great typographic solution?

It's a fine line between cheesy and romantic, so it's nice to find things that are slightly quirky or funny. I have long admired the illustrations of Blanca Gómez, (I'm super excited that she did the cover illustration for the new UPPERCASE magazine) and especially this one entitled Present. Loosely translated, the text on this t-shirt means "I'll be there for you always. And I'll get you drunk when you're sad". I love that it's cute and funny at the same time. And since I seem to like when something is in a foreign language, Anne Kiel's necklaces are sweet without being too precious.

Happy Tuesday, and Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! I was looking for a lucky something. You know, that thing that for one reason or another you've imbued with the notion that it can somehow increase your luck, change an outcome or just make you brave. I actually don't seem to have such a thing. (Which is unfortunate because I feel like I could use a little luck right about now.) I wear certain colours for certain situations having similar belief but nothing in the form of an object. What do you feel brings you luck?

Yesterday was a grilled cheese kind of day. A day to let your mind wander and day dream an hour or two away. Do you ever have those kind of days? As we continue to work on the decor in the apartment I have been envisioning how everything will look when it's done. It's so fun to think of different furniture arrangements and paint colours and then see how it all turns out.

Of course dreaming of decor leads to searching out actual objects. I love special handmade items that make a space feel more like a home. I am really liking all of the felt products from FilzFelt. And I think I might have to get one or two of these pillow slips from Yorktown Road, as I've been admiring them for a while now.

I really enjoyed Emily's green posts last week and nothing says spring like a little hit of kelly green! As a child, I don't recall liking this colour that much, but I've noticed lately that I have quite a few green items in my closet (and on my bookshelf, apparently).

Looking around flickr, this colour of nature came up a lot. I've put together a few of my favourites as an invitation for spring to arrive. What is your favourite thing about spring? I think mine might be the fact that the air smells fresh and new again. And of course seeing everything come back to life and flowers blooming isn't bad either.

I am a little late in posting this recipe, but hopefully you'll think it was worth waiting for! I should also add a little disclaimer as when my mom made these the butter and sugar overflowed in the muffins cups and made quite a mess on the bottom of the oven. So it might be a good idea to place the muffin tray on a baking sheet.
